I’ve been slacking hard lately, and thought it was time to pick up the pace a bit. I’ve been meaning to do this review for quite some time now, and now is the time. Lucy Tooth is a 5 song EP by the acoustic act Waking Aspen, a band we have previously featured on this site, and held with high praise. It only gets better with this release, trust me.
Tracklist
01. Knick Knack
02. Working Together
03. Lend Myself
04. Sugar Daddy
05. Walk With Me
There are a few things worth noting right off the bat; First, the quality on Lucy Tooth far surpasses that of the self titled EP we reviewed earlier this year. This gives such a better view of the rich textures on melodies on this EP. Secondly, this is a much more “mature” incarnation of Waking Aspen than the one present on the self titled, and it only adds to their already established image as a thriving acoustic/folk act.
I’ve always felt that this band has been severely underrated. I’m not exactly sure of their popularity, but I know for sure they are not exactly well known around these parts. And that is an incredible shame. Either the self titled or Lucy Tooth is a great introduction to the band, but I feel like i’m getting alittle ahead of myself here. Onto the actual review.
Lucy Tooth is not an entirely complex record, but that is one of its strongest suites. By complexity i’m not talking about the technical aspects of the music itself, but the instruments present, the layering, etc. It’s not too much, it’s not an overload of sounds that attack from all angles. It is bliss in musical form.
The strongest track on this record in my eyes is easily Working Together. Nothing personifies this band better than this song I believe. The bliss I mentioned before? Yeah, this is a pretty good example of that. If you think things go on some kind of downward spiral after this track than you are dead wrong. Lend Myself comes at an incredibly close second place.
Waking Aspen, like I said before, is probably one of the most under-appreciated bands I have ever known, and it’s your duty as a lover of music to listen to this band.
